The toppings are the most important part of any pizza. By toppings, we mean the ingredients that are put on top of the pizza crust. Today, one can choose from a wide range of toppings. Besides the usual cheese and tomatoes, one can choose from seasonal vegetables, different kinds of grilled or cooked meat and even seafood. One can also choose fruits like pineapples for toppings. This goes really well with ham.
TYPE OF TOPPINGS
Milder cheeses such as Monterey Jack, Fontina, and Mozzarella are the best toppings. Pungent cheeses should be usedin smaller quantities. Cream cheese and mascarpone are excellent for fruit pizza. Some of the mild, creamy cheeses that can be used are Colby, Edam, Fontina, Gouda, Monterey Jack, Mozzarella, Muenster, Scamorze, and possibly Swiss.

METHODS OF USING TOPPINGS
Meats and seafood are cooked first and then arranged on a pizza. Their flavour depends on the way they are cooked. They can be roasted, grilled, barbecued and marinated, or coated with any pizza sauce before being put into the oven. Each process gives the meat a distinctive flavor and texture, and makes for fun experimentation. Most vegetables do not need to be pre-cooked unless they cook more slowly than the other pizza toppings, or if they are very juicy.
WHY TOPPINGS ARE USED?Pizza toppings are personal statements and reflects an individuals tastes. Besides the fixed toppings of cheedse, meat and veggies, one can make free use of their imagination when selecting the topping. One can mix and match and choose different combinations but one should also take care not to overdo it. Too many different kinds of toppings can spoil the flavour and make the pizza messy. One should combine their toppings in such a way that the distinctive flavour of each item can be relished to the full. Each bite should give a taste of the toppings and it should not taste like a jumble of mixed food.
